The Woolworth building and Greensboro sit-in anchor the mural’s story of civic change. Other scenes recognize Dr. George Simkins Jr., Bennett College voter-registration efforts, and JoAnne Smart and Bettye Ann Davis Tillman, the first two African American students admitted to the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina in 1956. Archival imagery of classrooms, North Elm Street, and community institutions connects these milestones to the wider city. The accompanying mural key identifies the people, places, and image sources.
